Artificial intelligence is already revolutionizing scientific discovery—even at this early stage in its development. Breakthroughs like AlphaFold have redefined our ability to predict protein structures, accelerating drug discovery and bringing us closer to building digital twins of human cells. AI-driven weather models are now surpassing traditional systems in accuracy, speed, and the ability to forecast extreme events such as hurricanes. Generative AI is enabling automated materials discovery, offering new pathways to critical technologies like nuclear fusion and carbon capture.
AI is also reshaping core scientific disciplines: it is designing more efficient algorithms in computer science, assisting in mathematical proof generation, decoding human brain signals to advance neuroscience, identifying gene-editing sequences for targeted therapies, and driving large-scale analysis in particle physics and astronomy. These advances are only the beginning—the pace of progress is rapidly accelerating.
This timely symposium, held under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, brings together leading researchers from academia and industry to explore the transformative impact of AI on science. Co-hosted by the newly launched EDUCATE Centre of Excellence—funded by the Swedish Research Council—the event offers a unique forum for cross-disciplinary exchange and collaboration at the intersection of science and artificial intelligence.
