On 28 September, Russia carried out a drone attack on Kyiv which, amongst other targets, struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), resulting in at least one fatality and several injuries. “Academies are places of science and knowledge, not targets in war. As a sister academy, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences stands, together with ALLEA, in solidarity with the Ukrainian Academy and its researchers. We share in the grief of our affected colleagues at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and their families and are saddened to see the extensive damage and destruction of its historic building,” says the Academy’s Secretary General, Ellen Moons.
ALLEA emphasises that the attack is one of many targeting Ukraine’s scientific and cultural infrastructure and regards them as a deliberate attempt by Russia to eradicate the conditions necessary for free research, knowledge and a democratic society.
