At a meeting on 10 September three foreign and three Swedish members were elected members of the Academy. Their disciplines range from biochemistry, geosciences and astronomy to neuroscience and economics.
FOREIGN MEMBERS
Class for Astronomy and Space science
Eigil Friis-Christensen is Professor at DTU Space, Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen. Professor Friis-Christensen’s scientific work comprises connecting processes between solar wind and the magnetosphere and the effect of solar variations on the atmosphere, including possible effects on the climate. He has also led major satellite projects aimed at understanding how earth magnetism is produced and changes and how it is possible to get an image of processes in the earth’s interior from measurements of magnetic fields.
Class for Geosciences
Veerabhadran Ramanathan is Victor Alderson Professor of Applied Ocean Sciences and Distinguished Professor of Climate and Atmospheric Sciences at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA. Professor Ramanathan is an eminent researcher in the field of atmospheric science. His work includes the atmosphere’s radiation balance, the greenhouse effect of various gases, the role of clouds in the climate system and the effects on the climate and human beings of the widespread dust clouds over Asia.
Class for Social sciences
Jason Shogren is Stroock Professor of Natural Resource Conservation & Management at Department of Economics and Finance, University of Wyoming, Laramie, USA. He works in several specialist fields such as microeconomics (interaction between producers and consumers in the markets), the political economy of environmental and natural resources and the public economy. In recent years, he has also become interested in paleoeconomics, which attempts to reconstruct the management of resources by early mankind.
SWEDISH MEMBERS
Class for chemistry

Torleif Härd, Professor of Medical Biochemistry at Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg.
Class for Social sciences
Lars Nyberg, Professor of Neuroscience at Department of Integrative Medical Biology at Umeå University.
