New foreign member elected to the Academy

The Academy has elected Professor John Broome, University of Oxford, UK as foreign member in Class X (the class for humanities and for outstanding services to science).

John Broome is a British philosopher with a background also in economics. He is currently the White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford. His current research concerns a study of the nature of reasoning in general and of practical reasoning in particular. Apart from his work on practical reasoning, Broome’s philosophical contributions fall within four main areas; fairness, weighing goods, incommensurability versus vagueness in value comparisons, weighing lives.

His main philosophical project over the years has been to show how ethics and philosophical theories of practical rationality can profit from economics, especially from decision theory, and how economics in turn can profit from a reflection on its philosophical foundations.
