The symposium is organized by Dr Marta Zakrzewska, Prof. Jonas Olofsson, and the Swedish National Committee for Psychology (Svenska Nationalkommittén för Psykologi) at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
The symposium concerns how disease shapes human emotion, thought and behavior, and constitute an interface between the biological and social sides of human life. The recent pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), brought into light the psychological aspects of disease-related social behaviors, including preventive and risk behavior. As the Swedish National Committee for Psychological Sciences stated in their report, human behavior was an important feature of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the effects of future pandemics will, similarly, depend on us.
The symposium is open to the general public, free of charge, and is hosted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. In connection with the symposium, the Swedish National Committee for Psychology will award the 2024 prize for Young Researcher in Psychology (‘Yngre forskare i psykologi’) to Dr. Marta Zakrzewska for her “groundbreaking research on the interplay between body odor and social prejudice, and her contributions to understanding disease avoidance mechanisms within social psychology”.
