The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences urges Hungarian lawmakers to withdraw new laws

The Hungarian government has proposed two new laws, the proposed amendment of the Law on the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Law on the 2019 state budget. The leaders of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences now make a public statement, urging the Ministry of Innovation and Technology to withdraw the laws.

“If passed, these laws will threaten the scientific autonomy and the quality of scientific output of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and it will have consequences for the reputation of the Hungarian academy and Hungarian science in general.”

The statement is signed by Professor Christina Moberg, President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and Professor Göran K. Hansson, Secretary General.

The statement has been sent to till Lázló Palkovics, Minister for Innovation and Technology.
