Academy member Sabin Gold Medal Award Recipient 2017
Professor Jan Holmgren, member of the Academy's Class for medical sciences, has been awarded the 2017 Sabin Gold Medal Award for his pioneering contributions to oral vaccine research and mucosal immunology, as well as his leadership in the discovery of the world's first effective oral cholera vaccine.
Jan Holmgren is a global health leader who led the team that discovered the world’s first effective oral cholera vaccine, elucidated fundamental mechanisms of enteric infection pathogenesis and immunity, and spearheaded efforts to expand global access of affordable vaccines through technology transfer and capacity building.
Jan Holmgren is Professor at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and was the founding Director of the University of Gothenburg Vaccine Research Institute (GUVAX).
