One of the fundamental requirements of life is the ability to avoid harm by learning to predict danger. Across a wide range of species, such learning can be achieved through direct aversive experiences, or by exploiting the aversive experiences of other individuals through social learning. Irrespective of the learning history, persistent and excessive fear responses to events that no longer predict danger can develop into pathological anxiety. In fact, the inability to extinguish fear responses when they are no longer appropriate is a hallmark of many anxiety disorders. As a consequence, considerable interest has been turn to strategies that facilitate the development and persistence of safety learning that can promote the formation of new associations that counteract or eliminate fear responses. In this symposium, leading researchers will describe the basic processes underlying fear and safety learning, how these processes relate to the development and treatment of fear-related anxiety disorders, and describe novel experimental approaches, targeting fear and safety memory formation.
